Welcome to Parenthood

Today when I went to the elementary school I work at the teacher with whom I share a classroom with approached me about some damaged property in her classroom. It was a whiteboard easel she uses and it was covered in glue, crayon, marker, and scratches. Oh, no. It's either one of my students or my child. After investigating (Ellen, did you color this?) we solved the case. It was Ellen. Oh dear. So tomorrow it's a trip to IKEA to buy a new easel for Ms. Nielson. This is a moment I like to refer to as "Welcome to Parenthood". These moments are times when reality hits and you realize you are a parent and what the joys and/or responsibilities are included. As Ellen gets older the "Welcome to Parenthood" moments shift slightly. When she was growing from baby to infant then infant to toddler the welcoming moments were more like "Wow she's getting so big". Now it's "My child did that?"

Another bit of "Welcome to Parenthood" is when life stops happening like you planned. (That's inclusive of Welcome to Life as well.) Pregnancy #1 was a piece of cake. No problems at all. Pregnancy #2 threw me for a loop and now I am on drugs to even help me get pregnant and stay pregnant.

I thought I could keep this post light and funny, but it is hard to cover up the feelings that come along with all the trying to get pregnant junk. Luckily I have success stories in my life to keep me hopeful, but I'm also trying to be accepting of whatever happens. I remember when I was pregnant with Ellen, and my older brother and his wife who had been married for like 5 years were still trying to get pregnant. I felt worried about the pain that would cause them, but like so many situations in life God was just teaching and preparing me. Now that I'm in their situation and they've had two kids I can be more understanding, rejoicing and calm.

Here's to Life and to Parenthood, may there be many days ahead!!

take the money out of her piggy bank. I don't want to pay for an easel.

Oh angie - you hit the nail on the head! We willingly go through so much to bring these little ones into our lives! Good luck to you! Our prayers are with you - we know the "joys" of trying to conceive as well!!

I want to leave something reassuring on this, but I'm really not sure what to say. Life never really happens the way you expect it too. And it has a way of kicking you in the teeth. I guess that we just chalk it all up to experience, good and bad. You're a wonderful mother, Ang.

Ellen and the easel is just the tip of the iceberg because she has the great batman as her dad. But as far as the parenthood (new) goes. The lord is in charge and he knows what you guys need. Remember that and your heart will have a little more peace. His timing is impeccable, you'll see that in a few years as you look back. I do.
